Amish cuisine and food

Amish food is very popular in Lancaster and can easily be bought at food markets or eaten in Amish-run restaurants.

You can also buy directly from the Amish at places similar to the so-called "roadside stations" in Japan. You can buy not only fresh vegetables, but also baked goods, pickles, canned goods, and bottled goods.

The cheese made with fresh milk and spicy beef jerky are also delicious and highly recommended.

Also, in early spring, the barbecued chicken sold at roadside stands is cheap and delicious.

I once had grilled chicken made by an Amish friend, and it was a little spicy. There are two types, normal and hot. However, the seasoning seems to vary from household to household. It seems that each roadside stand also reflects the seasoning and secret recipes of each household, so it might be a good idea to try different places. The good places seem to be well-known among the locals, as there are often crowds of people gathered in the pastoral landscape of the pastures.

However, for tourists, it is a street vendor that appears unexpectedly and is not even listed on Google Maps, so it is best to check tourist information such as what days it is open and which places are delicious before going. If you are a local, you may be able to tell me by word of mouth which places are delicious.

If you have trouble finding street vendors, you can eat at the Amish grilling stand inside the Root Market, which is open every Tuesday. They also serve fried chicken, which is delicious. You can order parts of chicken that are not often eaten as fried chicken in the US. For example, fried chicken gizzards have a unique texture and the more you chew them, the more flavor they release. I've never seen them anywhere other than Amish stores, so it might be worth trying. Gizzards are sold as "Chicken Gizzard".

There are some light baked goods, but in Lancaster, the local pie that originated with Amish immigrants, "Shoo-fly Pie," is famous. It is almost always sold at Amish bakery stands. However, it is quite sweet.

That said, American cakes and other sweets are generally much sweeter than those in Japan, so this may be normal for Americans who are used to it.

However, when Shoo-fly Pie was created, there were no refrigerators like we have today, so it may be that it is even sweeter because it was made with a lot of sugar so that it could be preserved at room temperature.
