Amish Clothing

The Amish wear a specific style of clothing, so it is easy to tell that someone is Amish just by looking at their clothes.

The basic everyday clothes for men are a wide-brimmed straw hat, a plain-colored shirt, and black trousers, while the basic everyday clothes for women are a bonnet, a plain-colored dress, and an apron.

Amish clothing does not use buttons; everything is fastened with hooks or pins.

This is because buttons are luxury items. But it may not make much sense. It's hard to imagine now, but if you look back at history, buttons used to be very expensive in Europe. At one time, there was a trend where people wanted more and more expensive things to dress themselves up. Apparently, the button craze got so hot that a ban on buttons was issued. Given this historical background, I think buttons are not used today, as they are not luxury items, but rather something that confuses people and satisfies vanity. The hooks on Amish clothes are functionally the same as regular buttons and hold them in place. However, unlike buttons, the face of the button (?) is not visible on the outside, so it's like you can't see what's holding them in place from the outside. I felt that they would be more convenient for working without getting caught like buttons on cuffs.

Black trousers are held in place by suspenders rather than a belt.

I once borrowed one from an Amish friend and wore it, and it was surprisingly very comfortable. It was about five times more comfortable than I had imagined. It's not fastened with a belt, and it's not fastened with elastic like a jersey, so there's no feeling of tightness around the waist or hip bones. It's very loose and free. I think it's also good for relieving lower back pain.

When a man gets married, he grows a beard to show that he is married. He does not grow a mustache under his nose, as this is considered to be an association with the military and goes against the pacifist Amish belief.

Single women wear black bonnets, and married women wear white bonnets.

I don't dress up with jewellery or accessories.
