ランカスターの道の駅 ルーツマーケット

Lancaster Roadside Station Roots Market

If you are ever in Lancaster, Root's Market is one place you should definitely stop by.

This market, similar to a roadside station in Japan, is held every Tuesday. Local farmers and Amish people set up stalls, and you can buy a variety of things, from fresh foods to processed foods and everyday goods. Most of the items are cheaper than those you can buy at the supermarket, and are fresh and delicious. If you go in the summer, the soft serve ice cream made with fresh milk is also popular and delicious.

The market is divided into indoor and outdoor areas. The indoor area consists of three main buildings and several other buildings, and the outdoor area is also large, so you may get lost if it's your first time there.

The reason why the market is held every Tuesday is because America is a Christian country and Sunday is the Sabbath and no work is done. I would like to open it on Monday, but in the past, the transportation network was not as developed as it is now, so farmers from far away had to harvest and leave on Mondays and arrive at the market, and they had to set up and prepare their stalls, so the market used to be held on Tuesdays, and it is still held every Tuesday today. This is the same as the reason why American elections are still held on Tuesdays.

The name is written as "Roots Market," but rather than reading it as "Roots," locals pronounce it as "Route" or "Rout." This is also said to be derived from the Pennsylvania dialect and the Pennsylvania Dutch accent.

A little distance from the main building, agricultural auctions and other events are held, which are quite impressive. Here is a short video introduction.

In the middle, an Amish man and an Amish child are showing the items to the auction participants. The auctioneer is saying the prices really fast, but it's hard to follow what he's saying. While you're struggling to follow what he's saying, the items are sold. In the video, it looks like a Mennonite woman is bidding on strawberries.

Located at 705 Graystone Rd, Manheim, PA 17545 USA.
